Composers: Robert Benedict

Robert Benedict (1947-2013) Robert Benedict was born in Toronto, Ontario, where he demonstrated a talent for music making at an early age. As a young adult, Robert attracted the interest of The Royal Conservatory of Music, where he taught a variety of music levels, as well as leading annual Christmas music festivals for kids.

A classical guitarist and jazz pianist by trade, Robert's works are usually in a classical style, with jazz-like, modern harmonies. His compositions include a concerto for soprano and classical guitar, guitar quartets and duos, brass quintets, melodic studies, and concert pieces; some have been recorded in the United States and Canada. Robert was celebrated for his generosity of spirit, often providing free classes to aspiring musicians struggling financially, in addition to performing regularly at community and jazz events across northern BC and his eventual home of Comox, BC. Robert also enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, including reconditioning old cars, pianos, and clocks!

Robert passed away suddenly in June of 2013, but his music continues to be played by friends and many music students discovering his works for the first time. Robert is survived by his only son, Julian Benedict.
